US, European pharma stocks steady after Trump’s tariff move, Asia slips<\/strong><\/p>\n

Shares of U.S. and European pharmaceutical firms were little changed on Friday, while Asian drugmakers declined, after President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0announced 100% tariffs on\u00a0branded drugs<\/a>\u00a0imported by firms that are not building plants in the U.S.<\/p>\n

Analysts said the move was widely\u00a0expected<\/a>\u00a0and unlikely to materially hit the industry, given that most drugmakers have pledged billions of dollars in U.S. manufacturing investments.<\/p>\n

The conditions sort of weaken the announcement, which is probably why the market is not overly reacting, said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Spartan Capital Securities in New York.<\/p>\n

Shares of Eli Lilly\u00a0(LLY.N), opens new tab<\/a>\u00a0rose 1.3% while Bristol Myers Squibb\u00a0(BMY.N), opens new tab<\/a>, Merck\u00a0(MRK.N), opens new tab<\/a>, Amgen\u00a0(AMGN.O), opens new tab<\/a>\u00a0and Pfizer\u00a0(PFE.N), opens new tab<\/a>\u00a0were up marginally.<\/p>\n

Overall, this is a win for pharma and should not have a material impact, given most companies have announced they are building manufacturing facilities in the U.S., Jefferies analyst Akash Tewari said.<\/p>\n

EUROPEAN SHARES HOLD UP<\/p>\n

In Europe, Zealand Pharma\u00a0(ZELA.CO), opens new tab<\/a>, Novo Nordisk\u00a0(NOVOb.CO), opens new tab<\/a>\u00a0slipped 2.5% and 1.9%, respectively, while Roche\u00a0(ROG.S), opens new tab<\/a>\u00a0was down marginally.<\/p>\n

Bayer\u00a0(BAYGn.DE), opens new tab<\/a>\u00a0Novartis\u00a0(NOVN.S), opens new tab<\/a>\u00a0and Lonza\u00a0(LONN.S), opens new tab<\/a>\u00a0rose marginally.<\/p>\n

“A lot of investors were expecting these kinds of tariffs, and it was partly reflected in valuations,” said Nabil Milali, portfolio manager at Edmond de Rothschild Asset Management.<\/p>\n

“There are also expectations this will not be the end game of the Trump administration, but a starting point for negotiations.”<\/p>\n

ASIA DECLINES<\/p>\n

Of Asia-Pacific companies with U.S. exposure, Japan’s Sumitomo Pharma\u00a0(4506.T), opens new tab<\/a>\u00a0closed down 3.5%, while Australia’s CSL\u00a0(CSL.AX), opens new tab<\/a>\u00a0hit a six-year low.<\/p>\n

Lorraine Tan, director of equity research for Asia at Morningstar, said the final\u00a0tariff<\/a>\u00a0rate should be lower given the pattern of negotiations so far, but that near-term uncertainty could weigh on share prices.<\/p>\n

Other analysts expected a limited impact on Asian drugmakers, as many focus on generic drugs, especially in China and India. Europe and Japan should also get some shelter as a result of trade deals, although industry representatives said this was not yet clear.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
