The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.astrazenecaclinicaltrials.com\/study\/D7260C00001\/\">Vista study<\/a>, which wrapped up in November, assessed weight loss of elecoglipron versus placebo over 36 weeks among 310 patients with obesity or overweight.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meanwhile, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.astrazenecaclinicaltrials.com\/study\/D7261C00001\/\">Solstice trial<\/a>, which finished in December, assessed blood sugar control of elecoglipron\u00a0versus placebo or semaglutide\u2014the ingredient in Novo Nordisk\u2019s Wegovy\u2014in 406 participants with Type 2 diabetes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The company disclosed in its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.astrazeneca.com\/content\/dam\/az\/PDF\/2025\/Q4-FY\/Full-year-Q4-2025-results-presentation.pdf\">full-year 2025 earnings results<\/a>\u00a0(PDF) this morning that both trials hit their primary endpoints, and elecoglipron\u2014which AstraZeneca\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/fiercebiotech.com\/biotech\/astrazeneca-after-dumping-one-glp-1-drug-pays-185m-upfront-reenter-oral-obesity-gold-rush\">licensed from Eccogene<\/a>\u00a0in 2023\u2014will be progressing into phase 3 development this year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, the pharma is holding back on revealing the level of weight loss the drug induced in each study\u2014a make-or-break factor in the highly competitive obesity space\u2014until the American Diabetes Association conference in June.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When asked during this morning\u2019s earnings press conference whether elecoglipron had held its own against the competition, AstraZeneca CEO Pascal Soriot wouldn\u2019t get drawn into the specifics.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe only thing I will say is that we have a very competitive profile,\u201d Soriot told journalists.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201c[As] you would imagine, we will not move into phase 3 and unlock all this investment for monotherapy, combination, cardiovascular outcome trials\u2014which you can imagine, is not inexpensive\u2014if we didn&#8217;t believe the product,\u201d the CEO continued.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Novo Nordisk became the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiercepharma.com\/pharma\/novo-nordisk-wins-fda-approval-wegovy-pill-introducing-first-oral-glp-1-option-obesity\">first company to launch<\/a>\u00a0an oral GLP-1 drug for weight loss in December via the oral version of Wegovy, while Eli Lilly is reportedly expecting a decision on its own GLP-1 pill orforglipron early in the second quarter.
