US FDA greenlights Viridian’s thyroid eye disease drug<\/strong><\/p>\n

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Viridian Therapeutics’\u00a0(VRDN.O), opens new tab<\/a>\u00a0drug to treat patients \u200bwith thyroid eye disease, the company said on Friday, sending its shares up \u200c6% in extended trading.<\/p>\n

The decision gives patients a new treatment option in a market where Amgen’s\u00a0(AMGN.O), opens new tab<\/a>\u00a0Tepezza has been the only approved therapy.<\/p>\n

The approval was based on two late-stage studies that showed the drug \u200bled to rapid and sustained improvements in key symptoms, including eye bulging \u200band double vision.<\/p>\n

Thyroid eye disease is an autoimmune condition that causes inflammation, \u2060swelling and fat expansion behind the eyes, often leading to bulging, pain redness \u200band double vision.<\/p>\n

The active form of the disease is marked by acute inflammation and pain \u200bthat can last for months to years, while its chronic form is the stable phase in which symptoms persist without active swelling.<\/p>\n

The approval for the drug, Lumvoa, is supported by data to \u200btreat both active and chronic forms of the disease.
\nLumvoa – which works by blocking IGF-1R, \u200ba receptor involved in the disease process – is administered over 12 weeks as five intravenous infusions \u200cspaced \u2060three weeks apart.<\/p>\n

Amgen’s\u00a0(AMGN.O), opens new tab<\/a>\u00a0Tepezza, approved in 2020, is the only other approved therapy for active thyroid eye disease in the U.S.<\/p>\n

In studies, Lumvoa was the first therapy that showed a statistically significant benefit in both reducing and fully resolving double vision across different \u200bstages of the \u200bdisease, Viridian said.
\n“We were \u2060seeing positive response and resolution of diplopia in the chronic patient population, which had never been seen before,” CEO Steve Mahoney \u200btold Reuters.<\/p>\n

The company plans to launch the treatment immediately, marking \u200bits first \u2060commercial product.
\nViridian told Reuters that it expected to price Lumvoa at parity with the existing approved IGF-1R therapy on a course-of-therapy basis.<\/p>\n

Viridian is also developing a subcutaneous treatment for the \u2060disease, \u200bwhich could expand the market by allowing patients to \u200badminister the drug at home. The company expects to file for its U.S. approval in early 2027.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
