FDA clears Orca’s blood cancer therapy to reduce stem cell transplant complications<\/b><\/p>\n
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on \u200bTuesday it has approved Orca Bio’s therapy for the treatment of \u200ccertain blood cancers, which also aims to lower the risk of stem cell transplant complications.<\/p>\n
The therapy, called Orca-T, brand name Tregzi, aims to treat patients with \u200bblood cancers including acute myeloid leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia and \u200bmyelodysplastic syndromes.<\/p>\n
Orca-T is designed to rebuild a patient’s damaged blood \u2060and immune system using healthy blood-forming and immune cells from \u200ba matched donor, while reducing serious complications associated with conventional donor stem \u200bcell transplants.<\/p>\n
The privately held biotech’s CEO, Nate Fernhoff, told Reuters the therapy will have an acquisition cost of $428,000 for wholesalers, adding that the company expects it to be available for \u200borders by the end of July.<\/p>\n
Fernhoff said Orca-T’s key benefit \u200bis improving survival free from chronic graft-versus-host disease, or GvHD, calling it a “more fully \u200crestorative \u2060treatment” for blood cancer patients.<\/p>\n
The approval was based on a late-stage trial in which 78% of patients who received Orca-T were alive and free from moderate-to-severe chronic GvHD at one year, compared with \u200b38% of those \u200bwho received a \u2060conventional transplant.<\/p>\n
GvHD is a transplant complication in which donor immune cells attack the patient’s healthy tissues. It \u200bcan damage organs, require long-term immune-suppressing drugs, increase \u200binfection risk \u2060and can be fatal.
\nThe therapy is made by separating donor blood into specific cell types, including regulatory T cells to control graft-versus-host disease, \u2060stem \u200bcells to rebuild the blood and immune \u200bsystem, and conventional T cells to help fight infections and cancer relapse.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
