Common Blood Pressure Drug May Help Treat ADHD Symptoms

A new study shows that Pfizer’s blood pressure medication amlodipine/Norvasc was effective and well-tolerated in preclinical models of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The researchers’ findings could support further studies and lead to a potential new treatment to help manage symptoms of the neurodevelopmental disorder, which begins in childhood and continues throughout life, affecting a person’s ability to perform daily responsibilities, including academics and work.

Common treatments for ADHD include stimulant medications such as methylphenidate (brand name Ritalin) from Novartis, which has shown significant success in treating patients, and non-stimulant medications such as viloxazine/Qelbree from Supernus Pharmaceuticals. Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology
