Over 1 in 5 Adults Worldwide Infected with Genital Herpes

According to the latest estimates from a new study, more than 1 in 5 adults globally are infected with genital herpes.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that this includes approximately 846 million individuals aged 15 to 49 years.

Genital herpes, a sexually transmitted infection, can be caused by two types of viruses: HSV-1 and HSV-2. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there is no definitive cure for this infection, but certain treatments can help reduce symptoms.

Most individuals with genital herpes exhibit few or no symptoms, but some may experience painful sores and blisters.

The study highlights a significant increase in genital herpes cases caused by the HSV-2 virus, which is associated with more severe disease progression and a threefold higher risk of HIV infection.
