Overconsumption of Supplements Increases Cancer Risk
Many individuals view dietary supplements as a quick fix to improve their health and consume high doses without consulting a doctor. Some also turn to these pills in hopes of preventing cancer. However, excessive use of vitamin and mineral supplements can have dangerous side effects and potentially stimulate tumor growth instead of protecting against it.
A cancer nutrition specialist in Washington State raised concerns on the social media platform TikTok about the potential cancer risks associated with common supplements. The specialist warned that high doses of vitamins like C and B12, often consumed to enhance health and boost the immune system, could have more harmful effects than benefits, increasing the risk of cancer.
Nicole Andrews added that many common supplements, like vitamin C, known for boosting the immune system, are often overconsumed. This is dangerous because the body cannot get rid of excess vitamins and instead is forced to absorb them through the digestive system and bloodstream. When supplements are not properly processed, they can attack healthy cells and stimulate the growth of cancerous tumors.
A study published in the journal Cancers also examined the overlooked risks of dietary supplements, particularly their potential link to increased cancer risk. According to the results, the growing trend of supplement use shows how high doses and regular consumption can play a role in cancer development.
While the use of supplements prescribed by doctors for at-risk groups can be helpful, the lack of regulation and long-term safety data has raised concerns in this regard.
