New antibiotic shows promise for effective treatment of tuberculosis

New antibiotic shows promise for effective treatment of tuberculosis

Every year, about 10 million people worldwide contract tuberculosis (TB), caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTb), and almost 1.5 million people die from the disease. As a result, the rise in drug-resistant TB has led to an urgent need for new drugs.

Scientists at the German Center for Infection Research and the German Institute for Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Borstel have developed a new antibiotic, BTZ-043, that can effectively penetrate tuberculosis lesions and fight the Mtb bacteria even in areas of the body that are difficult to reach.
